The Silent Invasion is an Ohia Project supplement for Grades 4-12 produced for the State Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species. Five engaging activities educate students about invasive alien plants and animals in Hawaii.

Grades 4-6

  • No-no's (101k): This is the story of how the Hokulea prevented the no-no's from coming to Hawaii.
  • The Invasion Game (820k): This is a continuation of the story of the no-no's plus instructions for the Invasion Game.

Grades 7-8

  • Stop the Invasion! (156k): Students create a public awareness campaign of invasive alien species

Grades 9-12

  • Silent Invasion for 9-12 (238k): students compare maps showing ecosystems before and after human habitation
  • Timeline (170k): students create a timeline that shows the decline of native ecosystems.

Alien Species Flash Cards

Learn about Hawaii's alien species from this set of 20 cards. Cards are made from sturdy, 8.5x11 card stock with information about alien species on one side and full-colored pictures on the other. Pick up your FREE set at MGF.

miconia (Miconia calvescens)

Miconia trees can grow up to 15 m (45 ft) tall! Their oval-shaped leaves are purple underneath and can grow up to 1 m (3 ft) long. This pest species has already destroyed a large percentage of Tahiti's native forest by shading out native plants!
